If you haven’t been able to get from 1-80 using Mage Power Leveling techniques, then keep reading. I will show you the absolute speediest way to get there. I will share the good and the bad. What stuff works and what doesn’t. And then the one thing that I finally learned by accident that solved all my problems.

It used to take me hours of roaming around trying to locate things to level myself up faster. I would end up spending all my time level grinding because I couldn’t find any quests to get my experience bar to go up. I got exceedingly frustrated with this and was ready to quit.

It is actually an in game add-on.It has a convenient green arrow that directs you where to go and even tells you the coordinates of everything you need. It also tells you when you complete a quest and tells you to turn it in. Mage quests are also targeted. Hearing how often that enjoyable little “ding” sound goes off isamazing when you use this add-on.

Another awesome thing about this is it doesn’t matter if you start out as a Draenei or Blood Elf, Troll or Gnome, it knows the fastest power leveling route. Also, you can spec as a fire mage, a frost mage, an arcane mage, or even a hybrid mage and it doesn’t matter: you’ll get to level 80 in under a week every time.

My only complaint about this addon is it does not contain anything about profession leveling. This guide would be complete if had taken the time to show you how to cheaply level up your professions. Such as where to go to level up skinning and the cheapest way to max out tailoring. Aside from that, this guide is the best I have found for mage power leveling. The discovery of this awesome guide has now allowed me to enjoy PvP and end game instances in no time at all.

1. How do I make gold if I don’t have any to begin with?
Answer: Kill a few mobs, get something to work with even if its just a few silver. (I started with 5 silver and went to 5k in just my spare time pre-wotlk) Start applying the “buy low, sell high” principle until you have something substantial to work with. You can always focus on lower level items since a lot of higher levels buy them for their alts.

2. How do I know what the price limit is for an item?
Answer: You can get auctioneer if you feel like it and observe the price changes or if you are like me, just observe the auction house a few minutes a day to see how the prices fluctuate. Also, play around with prices, jack them way up to see what happens. (I have listed low level green items on many occasions for 300g + and actually sold them!)

I got control of 100 + items in the same category and then some airhead put up his 10 items for half my price, what do I do?
Answer: Be patient. Just like the stock market, prices go up and down. Someone decides to mess with you, let them. Either their items will sell fast so that yours can start selling as well, or they will keep lowering the prices after they realize that nobody is buying them. On the bright side: if their items sell fast, well its time for yours to sell as well. If theirs keep dropping in price because nobody wants them (due to a slow economic period) all the better! Buy their items once they reach that “reasonable” price!

A slow economic period? What are you talking about?
Just like the real world, believe it or not, the virtual world within WoW is very similar. Your chances of selling items are greater when the server has more people on (duh!) There will be times when it seems your item has fallen out of the “hot” category and is no longer desired, but in reality its just a slow time when nobody is spending their PRECIOUS gold or simply less people are playing at any given time. This is why I stress the importance of diversifying your goods. Have something other than armor to sell, find weapons, gem stones, quest items, epic items, whatever it is that seems to be the hot ticket item on your server. While one item seems very slow on sales, another might be pulling you up while the slow one recovers.

How do I know what’s “hot” on my server?
Answer: Observe the auction house, see what sells fast. You can also ask around! Ask your guildies what they have sold. Observe the auction house item quantities and prices. If an item is going for a lot but there are only a few competitors, chances are that item is really good or someone is pulling the same trick you are. Play the game, CHECK THE STATS. If the item looks like something that You would want for one of your characters, chances are its good to sell! Other things to keep in mind: Consumables (everyone needs them just like the real food we buy irl). Ore, cloth, gems, hard to get quest items, specialty items with bonuses to trade skills, EPIC items, especially good greens for leveling. – think of the bandit items I mentioned earlier. My server has good sales for Titansteel, Abyss Crystals, any kind of cloth, ore, bars and level 80 epics. Possibilities are endless you just need to keep an eye on things that seem to sell well. This is why this guide focuses on making gold in your off-time when you are just logging in for a few minutes to replace your items on the AH or to collect the gold!

All of this sounds wonderful, but I simply don’t have any gold because I’m level 5!
Answer: Good for you, I made most of my fortune on a level 3 character who I happened to run to Stormwind from the newbie zone. Like I said, start small, move onto bigger things. Nobody becomes a millionaire in real life without first taking some smaller steps (unless they are a genius and I am certainly not one). There are some very rich people in WoW but they didn’t get there over night, in fact they probably worked their butts off to be where they are. I made over 5k + all sorts of high level enchants for my future characters on a level 3 who could barely kill anything. Now think of a level 80 and the potential there. The more gold you can get to play around with, the bigger toys you can buy!

Why won’t you just tell me what to buy and what to sell, step by step??
Answer: Every server is different, each has its own economies. Server populations vary greatly and some items are not in demand as others depending on the age of the server and progression of its population. If everyone in your server (impossible) has done Heroic Naxxramas, do you really think you will make any gold selling +5 agility gems? I doubt it.

If you are reading all of this and are thinking “well this is just too much work” IT IS NOT! I used to log on my AH parked alt every day twice a day and make over 600g a day in just a few minutes of running to my mailbox and back to the auction house. You are not supposed to sit there parked all day, that is why I encourage people to PLAY their characters and do this in your downtimes. So you ran all heroics for the day, so you got 2k gold in one day, why not turn that 2k into 10? Most people are afraid to spend their hard earned money and there is nothing wrong with that. However, it takes money to make money. A little knowledge goes a long way in WoW and real life itself. How do you think retailers do what they do? How do you think online business are booming? People buy things all the time! However, in order to have products to offer, you must spend some of your own cash (unless you know of a loan officer in wow, please let me know!)

This is a very simple strategy and works all of the time if you make sure to diversify in items. You don’t have to spread your cash, you could focus on a single category of items. Remember: the narrower your focus is, the higher the risk (the more spread out your product line is – the lower the risk) just like a typical real life investment.

Don’t Just sit there! Go try it out! Auctioneer is great for beginners to get acquainted with their auction house. As long as you are buying and selling, you are safe in the game. Market manipulation is a whole other story that can get you insanely rich and banned most likely but that is not the topic of this article. As of this writing, Wrath of The Lich King (the new World of Warcraft expansion) is right around the corner and with it comes a whole new continent (Northrend,) new raids, new creatures, the Death Knight, and more.

A new profession being introduced with Wrath, which actually went live with the 3.0 patch, on Oct. 14, is Inscription. This skill allows the scribe to write glyphs that will provide permanent buffs to characters.

What has this got to do with Herbalism? The inks used to write the scrolls and glyphs are made from herbs, 5 at a time. With many people taking the inscription skill there will be a huge demand for those herbs on the Auction House. That’s where you come in. Your Herbalism skill will be a superb money maker and/or a direct source of materials to drive your own Inscription skill.

First Off, Some Notes:

You’ll need to be at least level 58 to get your Herbalism skill leveled to 375, because you’ll need to be able to go to the Outlands to get your training and to access the higher level herbs. Once Wrath of the Lich King goes live you will be able to get higher level training in Northrend (you will need to be at least level 68) and drive your skill to 425.

A very cool addon to use, that will help your herb gathering, is Gatherer. Download it for free (donate if you want to) and read the documentation. This addon will mark on your map the various herbs (and ores and boxes) that have been found by other players previously. It does this with the help of a database that you can download with the addon. Load the database and you’ll have detailed maps of the locations of all the herbs you will need to level your skill.

Google “Gatherer Addon” and “Cartographer Addon” (for better maps) to find where to download these mods and also to get instructions for installing them.

Mounts help a lot with travel and the level 60 Epic Ground Mount will save lots of time, while the fling mounts (only in Ootlands, at level 70) make herb finding much easier.

Herb Picking 101:

In whichever area you happen to be you will want to get your skill as high as possible before moving on. If you don’t do that you will find many herbs in the new area that you just won’t have the skill to pick.

When you’re in any particular zone set your mini-map to show herbs and do loops around the area. The herbs will show as yellow dots on the map.

Once you have your apprentice Herbalism skill go to your favorite starting area and start gathering Peacebloom and Silverleaf. I went to Eversong woods, but these herbs are all over the place in all the Horde and Alliance starting areas.

Once the herbs in your area aren’t given you any skill improvements you’ll want to go to the next higher zone. I went to the Ghostlands, but the Barrens. Westfall, and Loch Modan are good areas, too. As I mentioned above, if you move on too soon you won’t have the skill to pick anything.

Most of the herbs on this list are the ones you will need for Inscription, so you can level this skill and build your herb stash at the same time. Or sell it all and make quite a bit of gold.

To start with you will be picking Peacebloom, Silverleaf, and Earthroot (skill 15,) until you are at least skill level 50.

The 10-20 area herbs, found in the Ghostlands, Durotar, Silverpine, Westfall, and Redridge, are: Peacebloom, Silverleaf, and Earthroot, Mageroyal (requires skill 50,) Briarthorn (70,) Stranglekelp (85 and take a water breathing potion,) and Bruiseweed (skill 100.)

In the 18-30 areas (Duskwood, Hillsbrad, and the Wetlands) you’ll find Mageroyal, Briarthorn, Stranglekelp, Bruiseweed, Wild Steelbloom (115,) Gravemoss (120,) Kingsblood (125,) and Liferoot (150.) The Grave Moss can be found in and around, you guessed it, graveyards.

Next up are the 30-40 areas: Go to the Arathi Highlands or Alterac mountains. Here’s what you’ll find: Stranglekelp, Bruiseweed, Wild Steelbloom, Gravemoss, Kingsblood, Liferoot, Goldthorn (170,) Khadgar’s whisker (185,) and maybe Wintersbite at 195. Stranglethorn Vale, The Badlands, and Swamp of Sorrows are other good herb picking places at this level.

In STV and the Badlands you’ll find Purple Lotus (210,) Badlands has Firebloom (205,) and the Swamp has Blindweed (235.) Firebloom (205.)

The 40 -50 zone: I went to The Hinterlands next, and then to the Eastern Plaguelands. In the Hinterlands you’ll find Purple lotus (skill 210, in the troll ruins,) Ghost mushroom (caves, 245,) Golden sansam (260,) and Sungrass at 270. Killing the local trolls will also result in some Wildvine drops.

The last area in the Old Word (Azeroth) that you will need to work is the Eastern Plagelands. You will find a variety of herbs there and will probably hit 300 before doing a full loop of the zone. You’ll find: Arthas’ tears (220,) Sungrass (270,) Golden sansam (260,) Dreamfoil (270,) Mountain silversage (280,) and Plaguebloom (285.)

Ok, now you have your 300 skill and you’re ready to hit the Outlands. Get Master Hebalist when you hit your side’s main town in Hellfire (Thrallmar or Honor Hold) and then do a few loops around Hellfire Peninsula and then Zangamarsh. Unless you’re hunting specific herbs you won’t need to go beyond Zangamarsh to hit 375.

When picking Outland herbs you will sometimes see various motes (life, shadow, etc.) that will come with your Outland Herb picking, particularly from the Felweed. Fel Lotus (which sells for a nice price) also has a small chance to drop from any of the Outland herbs. It’s most commonly seen off of the Felweed, Dreaming Glory, Ragveil, and Flame Caps.

Now go pick some flowers!
