Fast leveling, easy to play, a big critter as you comapnion… These are some of the things that make the World of Warcraft Hunter one of the, if not THE, most popular class in the game.

The main ability that defines the Hunter is her pet. Almost any class can use a bow or gun, and Warlocks get a certain set of demons to pick from, but Hunters can tame and work with practically any critter in the game. Cats, bears, boars, crabs, Thunderhawks, Bats, Owls, and more, there’s a pretty long list of critters to pick from.

While any critter has it’s advantages, besides the coolness factor, I’m going to suggest you pick from bears, boars, or cats. Bears can really soak the damage, cats don’t soak as well, but they dish it out better, and the boar can take some punishment and has a nifty charge ability. That charge ability has additional uses in certain situations, such as PvP (Player Vs Player.)

When you hit the Hunter trainer always make sure you hit the Pet Trainer as well. Always keep your pet’s health, growl (if it has growl,) and armor maxed out. As your pet levels up it will get training points which you can spend on increasing its abilities.

Also, higher level critters have certain other abilities, so you will want to upgrade your pet occasionally. An example is the stealthy cats in Thousand Needles or Stranglethorn Vale. Dismiss your current pet (right click the pet icon and pick “dismiss” from the menu) and tame the new one. You’ll also eventually gain any special abilities your new pet has and will be able to train other pets with those abilities.

As far as your stats go you will want to get as much Agility as possible. It’s your number one stat, figuring into your damage, your Crit Bonus, and your dodge. It even adds to your armor. Since you won’t be engaging in melee combat (or shouldn’t be, anyway) you’ll have no use for Strength. Spirit is wasted on you.

While Hunters do have a Mana Pool, they don’t use it up as fast as a caster (eg: Mage) so while a little Int (to increase your mana pool) is nice, don’t sacrifice Agility to get it. Stamina goes directly into Health, so more Stamina is always good, but you don’t need as much as a front line fighter (Rogues, for example.) Look for Agility first, then Stamina, maybe some Intelligence, then skip the others.

Some gear comes with special abilities such as “Attack Power” (AP.) This factors directly into your ranged damage so the more AP you can get the better. Other good ones to get are bonuses that add to your “Crit Rating” and/or Hit Rating.

Once you get your pet at level 10 your usual attack pattern for the rest of your career will be mainly this: send the pet in, let it grab the target’s attention, and then start shooting the target. Hunters are very weak melee fighters, even with their special melee attacks. Those attacks are mainly to hamper the target, allowing you to get back into shooting range. Let your pet handle the melee damage.

Sometimes the target of your attack will ignore your pet and charge you instead. Other players will always do this. If that’s the situation then your freezing trap, wing clip, and concussive shots will allow you to get some breathing room. Feign Death works very well against monsters, but it won’t work more than once against players.

As far as talents go… well, that’s the subject of some interesting debate. My suggestion is to go down the Beast Mastery tree primarily, with come Marksman talents to supplement the BM talents. The idea here is put much of your focus into making your pet into a lean, mean, destruction machine. Everything else is done in order to support that goal.

Lastly, work on your Hot Keys. You’ll want to bind your most used abilities to certain keys which you can easily reach while moving about. Try to develop a system where you can do the whole combat without ever having to use the mouse to click a target or activate a power.

For example, you use the WASD keys to move about and look around with the mouse. TAB will target your next opponent. Consider setting the F key to be your main attack, perhaps Arcane Shot. I use T for my auto attack and Shift+T for my pet attack.

If these keys don’t work for you that’s cool, come up with a better system. The idea is to be able to improve your fighting efficiency by not having to use the mouse for everything.

The Hunter is a pretty versatile class, actually. There is a lot of variety in pets and talents and many of the combinations one can come up with are quite worthwhile. Don’t be afraid to look into some of these variations and what things you may want to change, especially for PvP and Raiding.

And if you like to power level fast, their multi targeting abilities scores them the best experience per hour rate in the game, making them scale up the level faster than most if not all classes.

Before making suicidal raids for gold, remove all armor from the body. This reduces the gold you spend repairing the damaged equipment, thereby increasing your earning.

Tip4:
Focus on maximizing attack and quickly finishing off small enemies. There are enemies that take less than 20 seconds to finish off (less than 1000 health) if you focus on improving the attack. While these enemies don’t yield a ton of gold, following this strategy, you can earn 1 gold a minute or more without being bored. That’s 60 gold per hour!

UOSecondage is the era of Ultima Online where skill based PvP was at it’s highest, and on top of the Player versus Player food chain was the feared 7x, or 700 max skills Mage. The 7 skills were as follows: weapon skill, tactics, wrestling, magery, magic resist, meditation, evaluating intelligence. With these 7 skills a Mage could utilize the instant hit, also known as the insta-hit with only 25 dexterity. The stats of this build will be 100 strength, 100 mana, and 25 dex, reaching the cap of 225.

The template could easily beat a less skilled Dexer template, which would usually consist of the following skills: weapon skill, tactics, anatomy, healing, parry, magic resist, magery. This template would sometimes exclude Parry and pick up meditation to be more of a Hybrid, but the basic idea of this class is to outdamage their opponent with weapons, not magic, and keep their health high with bandages and perhaps the occasional heal through Magery.

The Mage template would often choose Swordsmanship for weapon skill since a Halberd, also known as a Hally, would do around 35-45 damage instantly whereas with fencing a long spear would only do 25. Macing with a Warhammer would do around 30 at times, but it also has the power to drain stamina. Usually skilled fighters ride on mounts, or horses so stamina loss is negligible and the bigger weapon, aka the Hally gets preference over it’s weaker, fast counterparts (dex doesn’t factor in because the weapon is used only for insta-hits). These instant hits are on a timer and “reload” themselves after X amount of time. Whether you are throwing a punch or swinging a Halberd the timer is the same. Mages can avoid these long delays by casting spells in the meantime, keeping their opponent damaged or defensive until their next instant hit is ready to go.

At the create a character select screen choose a name, a hair style, and skin tone. Be sure to put 50 skills in Magery, and Magic Resist; take one point out to put into Swordsmanship to obtain a Sword upon creation. To create this character one must use a weapon, or melee skills early on and kill weak NPCS or afford the reagants, also known as regs which are consumed each time a spell is cast. There are 8 reagents: black pearl, night shade, mandrake root, blood moss, spider silk, ginseng, garlic, sulfurous ash. Start the character with 50 Magery and 50 Magic Resistance since these are the hardest skills to gain in. Setup a macro with the program Razor, or EZmacro which will auto do tasks for you; setup a macro to Snoop a stationery NPCS backpack for dexterity. Once 100 dex is reached or a 100 skill, Macro Evaluating Intelligence on the same NPC until 100 intelligence or a 100 skill is reached. Then Macro Arms lore skill on a weapon in your backpack; you will at least have a Newbified dagger, one you can not lose upon death.

With high strength, dexterity, and intelligence you will last longer while fighting/training your skills. If you can not get any armor from established players you can fight at the graveyard North of Britania and simply wait for your health points to climb back up. If another warrior is training you can let them tank, or take the hits of the NPCS and get skill gains for free. The hardest part is the beginning since you won’t have any weapon skills, or armor. Once you see your Swordsmanship gaining along with Tactics it will become easier and easier to defeat skeletons and zombies and earn gold and or bone armor and gems.

Now you will need to train your future primary weapon and healing tool, Magery. With the money you obtain from fighting these NPCS at the Britain Graveyard you will be able to buy the 8 reagants that were listed above. You will need Magic scrolls to put into your Magery book. There are 64 total possible spells to be had; once you have a scroll in the book you do not need the scroll to cast, but only the required regs for that spell. I.E. fireball takes black pearl to cast. Purchase the scroll “Greater Heal” from an NPC Mage Vendor or a Player Character. Casting this spell will not only gain you Magery to around 60 but it will also keep you alive longer, earning you more gold per hour than simply waiting for HP to regenerate.

Swords, Tactics, and Magery should start to get respectable. Now you must cast higher level spells on yourself to gain in both Magery and Magic Resist. Either have another character heal you with bandages, or macro greater healing yourself for this next step. Cast energy bolt on yourself from 60-85 magery. This should give you high resist gains as well. Switch to Flamestrike once Energy bolt does not gain your skills as fast. Flamestrike will take you to GrandMaster, or GM, Magery and Magic Resist.

Training and starting as a Mage can be extremely difficult. Raising stats and skills before actually fighting with your Character is essential to making this less tedious. Magery and Magic Resist are very expensive, but they are the most powerful combination any Player vs Player fighter can utilize. Whether you play a 2d mmorpg or World of Warcraft, skill based characters are usually harder to make but reap the greatest rewards in the end. Happy Character creation.

Runecloth can ususally fetch a pretty good price at the Auction House.

Once you’ve cleared a few groups, head back to the Auction House and sell off the stuff that dropped that you don’t need. You’ll probably also get some good coin drops from these mobs too. There might be some stuff that you can sell to a vendor and get a decent price for as well. My overall experience with this area has been pretty good.
