Now don’t get me wrong, I love experiencing things on my own at first. I didn’t use any help in the first year of playing World of Warcraft and sometimes it was difficult. It took me forever just to get out of my rag clothing and it was a painfully slow progression, but I did gain a greater sense of accomplishment doing it on my own. However, these days, if I’ve wasted an hour just trying to find a “Ghostclaw Lynx” and all I see are “Springpaw Lynx”, I’m wasting my time (time that, again, is very precious to me). If I’m lost on a quest, I save the frustration and reach for Joana’s Horde Guide and the problem is solved. Most of the time, I find that I was completely off from where I should have been and would have just wasted more time (and probably would have damaged a keyboard along the way). Quests can be confusing and sometimes being befuddled in World of Warcraft is simply a matter of being lost in the grand world of Azeroth.

In the grand size of this game, one thing has probably become very clear to you: you will be spending many minutes a day simply running around, flying around, riding around, and galloping around (and did I mention running around?). Speaking of backtracking, have you ever started a new character in the same area that you’ve done before, only to not even remember how to do some of the quests you’ve completed once, twice, or more? I’m no spring chicken and maybe memory really is the first thing to go, but I don’t want to “explore” things that I’ve already explored. If I want to try playing a Blood Elf Priest and I’ve already played a Blood Elf Rogue, I can pick up Joana’s Horde Guide and get my new character leveled up ultra fast by sidestepping my exploring side and instantly gratifying my must-get-one-more-level side.

That one-more-level feeling is what makes World of Warcraft so addictive. I’ve known a few players who were “clickers”, basically players who choose to bind very few or no keys at all. The argument being they didn’t need bindings because of the 1.5 second global cooldown. To me, this just seems absolutely ridiculous. It’d be like trying to type only using one finger.

Clicking each button on your interface with the mouse simply isn’t as efficient as your ability to remember the layout of the keyboard. The big point is that clicking not only requires your ability to make fast decisions but also to drag the mouse over said button and click, all of this in the course of a battle? You’ll do yourself a huge favor by allowing memorization and muscle retention take you to glory.

The fewer abilities you have to click the better, binding all your abilities to hotkeys is crucial. For most of us, your left hand rests on the keyboard, positioned on home row. This should be your starting base for all your key bindings. Q, W, E, A, S, D by default are all your movement keys, even though you’ll primarily be using the mouse to move and change camera angles, having these keys bound to their original functions is important so you can continue moving while switching targets (since Tab target is hopelessly broken). As your mouse will be your primary camera angle adjuster you may choose to move your strafe keys from Q and E to A and D, thus opening up additional easy binds.

Depending on the length of your hand you’ll have to decide what will be the farthest reach for you, it will likely be 5, 6, or 7. Now draw an imaginary line down from that key and this is what will be, for lack of a better word, your WoW home row. The biggest thing to remember when your binding keys is that they need to be easy for you to hit, you don’t want to have to think about them or strain at all in clicking them. They all will have to be second nature to you, so it’s no longer a matter of adding a second variable of hand eye coordination into the choosing of a spell or ability.

There was a time when I was more or less a “clicker”, terrible I know, I had a few skills bound; sinister strike, eviscerate, kick, stuff like that, but I lacked many key abilities I needed to make myself a better player. I finally buckled down and bound everything, it took me probably two weeks to get really comfortable with everything I had bound, but in the long run it was a great decision.

I was faster in PvP, more efficient in PvE, and had gotten to a point where everything was basically second nature. Though this is what works for me, it might be work for everyone, you might have to try out a couple different setups to figure out what’s best for you. Though I truly believe, once you’ve given your set of hotkeys time to really get comfortable, it’ll make you a much better player and a stronger, faster opponent in PvP.

Take your time, get to know the details of Azeroth, and get to know each level in detail. The Blizzard developers have spent a lot of time, money, and effort to build it for you, so kick back and enjoy it! With that understanding in mind I offer you these five easy tips to level slowly.

1) Every time you get a new quest make sure to read the quest in detail, and then hop over to Thottbot.com, lookup that quest in their system, and read everything about it, including all the comments.

You’ll gain valuable insight into the quest and how to finish it and maybe some greater understanding of the backstory behind the quest. Best of all you won’t be dashing hither and yon getting stressed about leveling quickly.

2) Go AFK (Away From Keyboard) as much as possible, especially if you’re on a PvP (Player VS. Player) server. While AFK you can read your email, watch a video, browse the WoW forums, and so on. In addition, if you’re on that PvP server then the occasional run back to your body will help to keep your leveling times reasonable.

3) The Auction House is one of the greatest slowing mechanisms in the entire game (or any game, for that matter.) Every time you level make a trip over to the Auction House and see what spiffy new gear is available for your character.

Constantly upgrading your gear will have a couple of highly desirable effects: Time not spent adventuring is time well spent and the constant acquisition of new gear will insure that your bank account stays at a reasonably low level.

Window shopping can be as much a hobby in the World of Warcraft as it is in the real world. Browsing the Auction House, several times per level, even if your gold supply is lacking, is great fun. Who knows what you’ll find the next time you look?

4) Never ever even so much as glance at a WoW leveling guide. These are intended to level you from 1 to 70 as quickly as possible and isn’t just too much stress? Why use someone else’s experiences and take only 6 days (of in-game time) to get to level 70 and get a heart attack from all the stress?

Take 6 months instead and enjoy the game. Explore a bit, enjoy the scenery, and let the Type A speedsters eat the stress of the fast leveling.

5) Here’s the best tip: Play as many alts (alternate characters) as possible. The World of Warcraft gives you 50 slots to use for your characters so take full advantage of that. There’s nothing wrong with having 40+ characters between level 1 and 13.

Why not roll a Rogue or Hunter, or whatever class, for each race in the game that allows that class? For example, Rogues can be Orcs, Trolls, Undead, Blood Elves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Dwarves, or Humans so play one of each.

Not only will you gain a deeper understanding of the Rogue class (or whichever class you’re playing,) but you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the game world and how the different races relate to it.

Besides, eight level 15 characters is 120 total levels! 70 levels in just one character? Who needs that?

By following the above WoW Leveling Guide (and it works for other MMO games, as well) you will find yourself with enough time to enjoy the rest of the game. Explore the world, talk to new NPCs, take a little time to PvP, you’ll be amazed at how much you’ll be able to do if you’re not stressing about the next level.
