According to recent analysis by market researchers, the internet gaming industry is worth fifty billion dollars. The internet gaming companies have created their own virtual world where people can leave behind there real world and enjoy the amazing characters and glittering storyline. World of warcraft (WoW) is one of the most successful and famous online games.
World of Warcraft is Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game wherein, thousands of players are in game world at the same time playing different worlds. The players battles against each other or with different worlds. World of Warcraft is the fourth edition in warcraft Universe launched by the Blizzard Entertainment. The first game warcraft: orcs and humans was released in 1994. The world of warcraft takes you to the world of Azeroth, which is four year later conclusion shown in the previous edition Warcraft III: Frozen throne. The game was released in 2004 celebrating the tenth anniversary of Blizzard entertainment. Today the world of warcraft is the world’s largest online game with maximum subscriptions per month.
The gamplay includes the control of the various characters exploring the different landscapes, terrains, enemies and chatting with other players. The rewards are gained with more money, powers, items, experience which in turn shows the players overall progress and improved skills. The basic versions have 60 levels and the expansion pack ‘the burning crusade’ have 70 levels. The soon to be release of expansion pack ‘Wrath of lich king’ is up to 80 levels. The battles can be fought with other players with different world zones or can be fought with enemy, based on that current server rules and strategies. The same members can fight the duels but they do not provide much rewards and experience.
The characters in world of warcraft are unique with remarkable abilities. The characters are joined with the accounts and can be moved from servers. The characters or the accounts can moved in player Vs environment realm.
While creating characters players have options of eight races and nine character classes to choose from. The races are divided in to two factions – Alliance and Horde. Humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Draenei are all part of the Alliance group. Orcs, Tauren, Undead, Trolls and Blood Elves are part of the Horde group. Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Druid and Warrior are the nine classes available. The Death knight class is added in the yet to be released latest expansion called wrath of the lich king. In world of World of warcraft, there are two types of characters- player characters and Non player characters (NCP). Then there are three types of NCP in the game which are friendly NCP, Hostile and Neutral NCP. While playing the game, characters learn to develop skills which are non combat skills. These skills are called as the player’s Profession. There are two types of profession; one is primary and the other is secondary.
Then there are reputation levels which can directly impact the player’s progress and the overall rewards. The high reputation can be obtained by wining the battle grounds and powerful enemies. The high reputation can give you cheap buying at vendors and ability to gain unique items and armors.
The virtual world in World of warcraft consists of two worlds; Azeroth and Outlands. Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor are the two main landscapes in Azeroth. The Outlands can be accessed by the activation of ‘burning crusade’ expansion pack. The location can be reached by teleporting your self through the Dark portal in the southeast kingdom.
The pricing of the game varies in different region. In USA the monthly packs costs $15. In Europe it costs 11 to 13 euros. The world of warcraft is number one in reviews and rankings and world wide users are eagerly waiting for there next release to enjoy the mysterious world of Warcraft.

An average day in suburbia? Not quite. This is a day inside Second Life, a virtual world created by San Francisco-based game developer Linden Lab.
Welcome to the virtual economy, where currencies such as the Linden dollar trade against the U.S. dollar, companies like Internet Gaming Entertainment (IGE) create markets for everything from magic shields to potions, and entrepreneurs sell notary services and the latest fashions. One of the most popular games, World of Warcraft, reached one million North American players in August, three months ahead of its first anniversary. The games are particularly hot in America and Asia. After World of Warcraft was released in China last June, 1.5 million paying customers signed up in a month.
Such ventures — known as massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) — have spawned economies that would rival those of a small country but fly largely under the radar of economists, government statisticians and people beyond the 12-to-35-year-old demographic. However, these economies are becoming increasingly important, says Wharton legal studies professor Dan Hunter, adding that they could redefine the concept of work, help test economic theories and contribute to the gross domestic product in the United States. “Increasingly, these virtual economies are leading to real money trades,” notes Hunter, one of a handful of academics closely following this trend.
Another is Edward Castronova, a professor at Indiana University, who has written a series of papers examining the virtual economy which he estimates at somewhere between $200 million to $1 billion. In general, virtual economies are supported by assets collected during a game — such as the power to slay a dragon — that are then sold on the Internet for real dollars to other players looking for a competitive edge.
Steve Salyer, president of IGE, says the market for virtual asset trading could hit $1.5 billion in 2005 and $2.7 billion in 2006. Salyer’s projections are a blend of internal data and research from outside sources such as DFC Intelligence and the Yankee Group. “Nobody can say for sure how big the market is,” adds Dmitri Williams, a speech communications professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “It’s not like you can go on the street and poll people to find out.” In addition, he notes, many of the players who buy virtual goods are internationally based in locales such as China and Korea, making the dollars they spend hard to track.
While the size of the market is debatable, experts agree that virtual economies are expanding rapidly and warrant more attention. “It’s really amazing that this hasn’t gotten more attention,” says Kendall Whitehouse, senior director of information technology at Wharton. “You can learn a lot from these worlds.”
