During my campus life two years ago, I had the experience to tutor a problem boy aged 16. He was shy. He was at the third year of middle school and soon would attend the high school entering examination, which is a crucial point for Chinese young kids. He spent almost all his spare time during the past two years playing wow. When I asked him to why he stopped reading English, he simply replied he couldn’t put his mind on it. He was too indulged himself in World of Warcraft.

There was the other side of the coin. When I asked him about future, he was so resolute that he was determined to have a game career. That’s good but there will be a long way. Maybe he can find his way out. Maybe.

Not long before, there was the news that a Chinese 17 year old kid pours gasoline all over his classmate. When the reporter asked why he did it, the boy claimed he had lost himself in World of Warcraft and when he committed the crime he had transformed into a Fire Mage.
Besides under-aged players, the adults get their own problems too. Lin, Feng, Gui and Hua are colleagues. They play for weeks trying to move up 50 levels. All of them eating junk food, drinking Rockstar energy drinks to stay awake and not stopping to use the bathroom. As a result they become obese and unsociable with horrible acne and a lack of motivation while trying to defend themselves against a player who has reached the maximum level.
So is World of Warcraft all bad that people can be better off without it?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks then you should be fully aware of the big change coming in patch 2.3, +healing will now also give +33% of that healing back to the player in +damage. Certainly one of the most game changing buffs to ever be introduced though it seems to be somewhat down played compared to other potential changes.

This has been a long awaited change for many healers who have been complaining for ages that they were simply useless outside of raids. Without any damage gear they were confronted with no way to farm, quest, or really even PvP without the aid of another person or group of players.

Beyond the fact that healers should be able to grind at least semi-effectively, the changes to PvP and arena could be quite considerable. Now most healers are going to have anywhere from 1400-1800 healing in their PvP set, meaning 462-594 damage. Doesn’t sound like all that much, but take for example a standard 2345 setup (mage, warrior, holy priest, holy paladin, elemental shaman). The team has great success for one reason in particular, 2.5 healers. In addition, that team in a way now has an additional damage dealer via the holy priest’s shadow word: pain.

Though please don’t overestimate the change, a healer’s primary role in an arena is still going to be just that. Though the damage they have the potential to put out cannot be ignored, especially in the case of a 2.5 healer team, the “2345″ setup for example. How we play arena is about to change forever, and honestly, it’s a welcome change. It will allow talent specializations that were previously unrealistic to become viable. On top of the healer change, hunters are looking pretty solid. With so many buffs headed there way I’m interested to see how the class will respond as far as arena ratings go. There’s just so much coming in the next patch I simply cannot wait, new content, new gear, new arena season, it’s sure to be a blast!

The next important feature is the waypoints system that shows on your mini-map and main map. The original release of the in-game Zygor guide used to show a ton of waypoints. This was because it showed all the necessary steps you needed to level up. This was a cluttered mess. Now it just shows the waypoint of whatever quest you have highlighted on the in-game guide. This is positive because it means only the active quest waypoint shows. You now have a clear map. On the main map, when you place your cursor over the waypoint it shows you what you need to do when you get there. Useful addition.

The guide has an options feature where you can control aspects of the in-game guide, such as window opacity, waypoint size, guide size, icons size, and so on. These are multiple options and provide a degree of control that will prove useful for most gamers.

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), as defined today, have only existed since the early 1990s. World of Warcraft (commonly known as WoW) is a MMORPG in which a large number of players interact with one another in a virtual world. As in all Role Playing Games (RPGs), players assume the role of a fictional Character and take control over many of that character’s actions. MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player CRPGs (Computer Role Playing Games) by the number of players and by the game’s persistent World (persistent player world or virtual world-used as a setting for a role playing game), usually hosted by the game’s publisher, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game. The persistent player world is always available and world events happen continually.

There are two types of characters in the game Player Characters (PCs, or simply “characters”) and Non-Player Characters (NPCs). A Player Character is an avatar in the world of Azeroth that is controlled by a player. The color of a PC’s name tag can be blue, green, yellow or red depending on faction and Player v/s Player (PvP) status. Non-Player Characters are controlled by the game software and can only interact with PCs through scripted events or artificial intelligence (AI). There are three types of NPCs- Friendly NPCs, Hostile NPCs, Neutral NPCs whose names are displayed in green, red, and yellow. Friendly NPCs cannot attack friendly characters and vice versa. Hostile NPCs can freely attack any PC with whom they are hostile. Neutral NPCs will only attack if provoked.

When creating a character in World of Warcraft, the player can choose from ten different races in different factions for example Alliance and Horde. Race determines the character’s appearance, starting location, and initial skill set, called “racial traits“. The Alliance currently consists of Humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Draenei. The Horde currently consists of Orcs, Tauren, Undead, Trolls and Blood Elves. Draenei and Blood Elf characters were introduced in The Burning Crusade, and require that expansion in order to be created. In addition to the ten playable races there are many NPC races including (but not limited to) Goblins, Ogres, Murlocs, and Naga.

The game has nine character classes that a player can choose from like Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior. Though not all classes are available for each race. Each class has a set of unique abilities and talents.
